Orthodontic teeth plate
Incorrect bite in children — a common phenomenon, with which it is better to fight as early as possible. The earlier the correction begins, the more chances a child has to grow up with a straight smile and healthy teeth. In modern dentistry, there is a wide selection of orthodontic appliances, among which one of the most popular are removable plates.
An orthodontic plate is a special device designed for bite correction. Due to its effectiveness and accessibility, this method enjoys great popularity in many countries.
The best results can be achieved by installing the plate at a young age, although in some cases it is also used for adult patients.
What are orthodontic plates for?
Plates for teeth alignment are an effective method for treating orthodontic disorders related to incorrect bite and uneven tooth alignment.
These orthodontic devices are used for the following:
- Eliminating excessive gaps between teeth
- Adjusting the size of the palate by expanding or narrowing it
- Controlling and directing jaw growth - sometimes stimulating it or, conversely, slowing it
- Normalising or correcting jaw shape
- Preventing tooth shifting and misalignment
- Moving teeth that are incorrectly positioned
- Correcting a deep distal bite
Orthodontic plates for children are not universal and are not always effective. They cannot address issues like crowded teeth or open bite. In some cases, these removable devices are part of a comprehensive orthodontic treatment and serve as a preparatory stage before installing braces.
In adults, plates are used rarely: only for minor bite deviations or to retain results after orthodontic treatment with braces.
The best outcomes with bite-plates are seen in children aged 6 to 12 years, when the dental and jaw systems are still developing and adjustments are easier and more effective.
Types of orthodontic plates
Dental plates for children come in various types depending on design and usage goals. The main types include:
- Single-jaw plates: used to correct teeth on one jaw only
- Double-jaw plates: encompass both jaws and are used for complex bite disorders
- Plates with a retraction arch: straighten front teeth using an elastic wire element
- Plates with a palatal expander: promote correct development of the upper jaw
- Plates with a hand-like spring: act on specific teeth without affecting the entire row
- Brüka system: designed specifically to correct the lower jaw bite
Plates can be removable or fixed. Fixed plates stay in place for an extended period, do not require daily care, and are suitable for children who find it difficult to manage removable appliances.
Stages of manufacturing and fitting an orthodontic plate
First, the doctor performs a thorough examination and assessment. To accurately identify dental issues in children, we often use X-ray diagnostics. Our equipment is safe for the child’s body and provides minimal radiation exposure. Based on the examination, the most suitable type of orthodontic plate is selected.
Next, oral sanitation is carried out: if any cavities are found, the affected teeth are treated. After that, a dental impression is taken and sent to the dental laboratory for the production of a custom-made appliance.
Once the appliance is ready, it is tried on. It should fit snugly against the palate and teeth, without causing discomfort or irritation. If needed, the appliance is adjusted in the lab.
After the final fitting, the doctor installs the plate, provides instructions on care and at-home treatment, and schedules the next appointment.
Indications for using an orthodontic plate
Orthodontic plates are recommended in situations such as:
- Jaw development disorders
- Narrowing or asymmetry of the dental arch
- Crowded or misaligned teeth
- Excessive gaps between teeth
- Need to correct the position of individual teeth
- Preparatory stage for braces or to maintain results after their removal
- Functional difficulties (chewing, speech, or breathing issues)
When plates aren’t suitable
Although orthodontic plates are considered safe, they are not recommended for:
- Complex bite pathologies
- Completed jaw growth (typically adults)
- Severe gum or periodontal disease
- Multiple carious lesions
- Serious speech or breathing disorders
- Material intolerance (allergies)
Before starting treatment, the orthodontist conducts a thorough examination to ensure plates are appropriate.
How to care for orthodontic plates
Caring for plates is easy and requires:
- Removing the plate before every meal and before brushing teeth
- Rinsing under running water after each removal
- Cleaning the plate daily (morning and evening) with a regular toothbrush and toothpaste
- Not skipping orthodontic visits, as the doctor may adjust the appliance or tighten wires as needed

How to care for dental plates?
Taking care of a removable appliance is simple. Before meals and brushing teeth, the plate should be removed and then put back afterward. It is cleaned using a regular toothbrush. During the first few days, the plate may cause slight discomfort or feel awkward in the mouth, but this is nothing to fear — adaptation to the appliance happens very quickly. If the child feels uncomfortable, they can always take it out and then put it back in. Within 1–2 weeks, children usually stop even noticing their plates.
How to choose the right plate?
Selecting an orthodontic system can take several weeks. The main stages are:
- Orthodontist consultation.
- Panoramic X-ray.
- Cephalometric radiograph.
- Dental impressions.
- Creating a plaster model in the dental laboratory.
- Fitting and manufacturing the orthodontic plate.
- Installing it in the oral cavity and patient training.
