Gum treatment

Periodontology is a branch of dentistry that studies, treats, and prevents diseases of the periodontium - the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. A specialist in this field is called a periodontist. The periodontium includes the gums, the bone tissue in which the tooth root is located, and the connective ligaments. Modern periodontological methods allow for the effective prevention and treatment of gum inflammation.

What types of gum inflammation exist?

The most common gum diseases are:

  1. Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums, which may affect one or several teeth. The condition can be acute or chronic. Gingivitis responds well to treatment and does not cause damage to the tooth structures, but if left untreated, it can lead to the development of periodontitis.
  2. Periodontitis is a disease that affects the supporting structures of the tooth, particularly the ligaments between the root and the jawbone. As periodontitis progresses, the gums begin to recede from the teeth, forming periodontal pockets in which food debris accumulates, bacteria grow, and pus may appear. If not treated promptly, this may lead to tooth loosening, displacement, or loss.
  3. Periodontosis is a disease accompanied by impaired blood circulation and degenerative changes in the periodontal tissues. Periodontosis often affects both jaws, causing gum atrophy, root exposure, and tooth mobility. This leads to the widening of gaps between teeth and, in advanced cases, their loss.

Periodontosis is the most severe gum disease. It usually has a chronic course and requires continuous treatment and supportive therapy.

When is gum treatment needed: main symptoms

Many problems can be prevented by paying more attention to oral and gum hygiene. Certain symptoms should serve as a warning and prompt you to see a periodontist:

  • Gum recession, resulting in exposed tooth necks;
  • Pain, itching, or gum swelling;
  • Gum bleeding (e.g., during brushing or when biting into hard foods like apples);
  • Bad breath;
  • Mouth ulcers;
  • Loose teeth;
  • Presence of tartar.

Each of these symptoms indicates the presence of a periodontal problem. Moreover, each disease has its own specific signs.

At our clinic, experienced specialists treat gum bleeding, swelling, recession, and other signs of inflammation.

Causes of gum diseases

Gingivitis and periodontitis are inflammatory conditions that arise due to poor oral hygiene and the accumulation of food particles on teeth and gums. It starts with the formation of a white plaque, which gradually turns into yellow-brown deposits that cannot be removed without professional help. This creates ideal conditions for bacterial growth and infection.

In addition, gum inflammation may be caused by minor injuries - for example, while eating or due to wearing dental prostheses. The risk of developing gingivitis and periodontitis increases with hormonal imbalances or vitamin deficiencies. These conditions are especially common in teenagers and pregnant women.

Periodontosis has different causes. It is a degenerative disease that develops due to insufficient blood supply to the gums. The risk increases in individuals with gastrointestinal diseases, cardiovascular conditions, diabetes, and other chronic illnesses.

Methods of gum disease treatment

At early stages, periodontal disease treatment is usually quite simple. The main steps include professional teeth cleaning and anti-inflammatory therapy targeting the gums.

For severe cases of periodontitis or periodontosis, a comprehensive approach is required. First, all dental deposits must be removed. Then, the oral cavity and gums are sanitised and disinfected. Treatment may include medications and instrumental gum therapy. Depending on the patient's condition and the specifics of the disease, the dentist may use various techniques, including ultrasound and Air-flow technology.

Periodontosis is treated with special medicinal ointments, deep cleaning of periodontal pockets using curettage, and physiotherapy procedures. In some cases, surgical intervention or prosthetic restoration may be necessary.

Gingivitis treatment also requires a comprehensive approach. A mandatory step is professional cleaning, removal of plaque, and prescription of anti-inflammatory therapy. Special treatments may include application of medicinal gels, rinses, and special toothpaste.

In certain cases, the periodontist may apply tooth splinting. This helps restore dental arch health by stabilising teeth and preventing their loss, especially in advanced forms of periodontitis. Additionally, splinting may be used as a preventive measure against gum inflammation.
