Dental sedation for children
Dental sedation for children is a modern method that helps ensure comfort and calm during dental procedures. It is used to reduce anxiety and fear in children, allowing them to undergo treatment peacefully and maintain a positive experience with visiting the dentist.
Benefits of dental sedation for children:
Reduced anxiety: Helps children feel calm and relaxed during procedures.
Improved treatment quality: Allows for more complex and longer procedures without stress for the child.
Safety: Uses safe and controlled sedation methods under the supervision of experienced professionals.
Comfort: Creates a comfortable environment for both the child and the dentist during treatment.
Types of Sedation Used in Our Clinic:
Inhalation sedation (laughing gas)
The most common method, involving the use of nitrous oxide (laughing gas). The child inhales the gas mixture through a mask, inducing a feeling of calm and relaxation.
Oral sedation
Involves the use of special medications taken orally before the procedure. This method allows the child to remain conscious but relaxed.
Deep sedation
Used for more complex or lengthy procedures. Performed under the supervision of an anesthesiologist who monitors the child’s condition throughout the treatment.
Sedation Procedure Steps:
Dentist consultation
Examination of the child’s oral cavity, health assessment, and selection of the optimal sedation method.
Preparation for the procedure
Discussion with parents about the sedation process, preparing the child, and performing necessary preliminary tests if required.
Sedation and treatment
Application of the selected sedation method under the supervision of specialists and completion of the dental treatment.
Post-procedure care
Monitoring the child’s condition after the procedure and providing parents with recommendations for follow-up care and recovery.

How does sedation affect a child?
Sedation for a child allows them to relax and calm down to the point where dental treatment will be associated only with positive emotions. Moreover, sedation helps improve the child’s ability to sit still, thereby increasing the amount of time they can spend in the dental chair. For the doctor, it provides the opportunity to perform their work more quickly, efficiently, and with higher quality.
Who is recommended to receive treatment under sedation?
Children are primarily recommended to undergo sedation if they are afraid of dentists.
It is also suitable for hyperactive children who find it difficult to sit in the chair for more than 15 minutes.
For children with developmental conditions or disorders such as autism or cerebral palsy, sedation should be used only after consultation with their primary physician.
Pediatric dental treatment under general anesthesia is indicated when multiple dental procedures need to be performed. This method allows everything to be completed in a single visit, as the child can remain in one position for an extended period of time.
What are the advantages of treating children under sedation (medicated sleep)?
- Painlessness
- No stress
- Treatment effectiveness
- Possibility of comprehensive treatment
When is medicated sleep used?
- Lengthy dental procedures: Treatment of multiple teeth, tooth extractions, or other complex interventions.
- Fear of dental treatment: If a child is very afraid of the dentist, sedation helps relieve this stress.
- Low pain tolerance: For children who are highly sensitive to pain.
- Special needs: Children with neurological or psychological disorders who cannot calmly undergo procedures.
Testimonials
I want to share our story with you. We turned to Gallant for the removal of all four wisdom teeth. The question was how to do it with the least stress for our child. After weighing all the pros and cons and consulting with more than one doctor, we decided to go with removal “under sedation.”And the day finally came... We arrived about 10 minutes early, filled out the necessary documents, and the nervousness was taking over. The anesthesiologist, postponing the scheduled removal, was providing first aid to me (kind of a support for my daughter). The procedure went quickly, efficiently, and with minimal stress for the child. The team of young specialists was competent, polite, and positive. The anesthesiologist called afterwards and showed concern for both my condition and my daughter’s. Three days later, the drains were removed, and a week after that, the stitches were taken out. There was no swelling or bruising at all. If you are still hesitating whether to endure it awake or choose sedation, make the right choice — treatment “in sleep.”
Thank you to the staff of this dental clinic for treating my daughter’s teeth under sedation! Everything went very well — they constantly monitored her condition and explained everything with great responsibility! Right after the procedure, they began waking my daughter up; she was relaxed, so they moved her to a room where she fully recovered. Later at home, she felt very good and was amazed that her teeth were treated painlessly. She happily said that if her teeth hurt again, she would want the treatment done under sleep! I highly recommend this type of treatment under sedation because it’s unlikely your child will be able to sit through the entire procedure!
