Periodontitis treatment

Request a call

Periodontitis is an inflammation of the tissues surrounding the root of a tooth, which occurs due to infection or trauma. If treatment is not started promptly, the acute form of the disease can develop into a chronic condition, which carries risks of complications such as purulent processes or destruction of the bone tissue.

Main causes of periodontitis

The primary factors contributing to the development of the disease include:

  • Complications of caries or pulpitis - infection spreads to the periodontium;
  • Bacterial infection of the root canals - staphylococci, streptococci;
  • Tooth trauma - impacts, cracks provoke inflammation;
  • Errors of dentists - poor-quality root canal treatment;
  • Poor nutrition - vitamin deficiencies weaken the immune system;
  • Harmful habits - smoking, alcohol consumption;
  • Chronic diseases - diabetes, heart problems, gastrointestinal tract issues, immune system disorders.

Periodontitis affects both adults and children, so treatment is important at any stage.

Symptoms of periodontitis

Periodontitis manifests differently depending on the stage of the disease:

  • Acute or dull pain - worsens when chewing or pressing on the tooth;
  • Swelling and redness of the gums - inflammation may spread to adjacent tissues;
  • Increased tooth sensitivity - reaction to hot, cold, or sweet stimuli;
  • Purulent discharge - possible appearance of fistulas and unpleasant mouth odor.

Unlike mild symptoms at early stages, periodontitis at later stages shows more pronounced signs. Therefore, regular visits to the dentist are very important.

Forms and stages of periodontitis

Periodontitis can take various forms and degrees of development, each characterised by specific symptoms and course features. Understanding these stages helps determine the optimal treatment approach and avoid serious complications.

Acute periodontitis

In the acute form, there is a constant localized pain. Initially, the pain is dull but may intensify when pressure is applied to the tooth. As the disease progresses to the stage of purulent inflammation, the pain becomes more intense, pulsating, with occasional painless intervals. General health deterioration may occur, including weakness, insomnia, and fever.

Chronic periodontitis

In the chronic form, mild pain occurs periodically, mostly when biting, pressing, or tapping the tooth. Darkening of the tooth is also possible. This form is characterised by the formation of granulomas and cysts in the periodontal tissues. They may not cause pain for a long time but gradually destroy the tooth root.

Chronic fibrous periodontitis

In this form, the inflamed tissues are gradually replaced by fibrous tissue. Pain is usually absent, but the tooth becomes brittle and may break. Diagnosis is made through radiography.

Serous periodontitis

This is the initial stage of acute periodontitis, accompanied by mild pain and swelling. With proper treatment, the process can be stopped without complications.

Traumatic periodontitis

This type arises from mechanical damage to the tooth: impacts, fractures, or excessive load. It may be accompanied by pain during chewing and gradual destruction of the tooth root.

Marginal periodontitis

This form is characterised by inflammation of tissues at the margin between the gums and the tooth. In severe cases, periodontal pockets may form, complicating treatment and requiring intervention by a periodontist.

Diagnosis of periodontitis

To determine the nature of the lesion, the dentist performs:

  • Visual examination - assessing the condition of the gums and tooth;
  • Radiography - a procedure that helps detect inflammatory processes in the root;
  • Computerised tomography - allows more detailed imaging.

Based on the obtained data, the doctor selects the most effective treatment method, considering the degree of damage and the individual characteristics of the patient.

Methods of periodontitis treatment

Periodontitis requires a comprehensive approach, treatment tactics depend on the form and stage of the disease. Timely dental consultation helps avoid complications and preserve the tooth. The main treatment methods include therapeutic and surgical approaches.

Therapeutic treatment

Initially, the dentist cleans the root canals of affected tissues and disinfects them. Then a medicinal treatment with antibacterial agents is performed to eliminate infection. The final step is filling the canals, which restores the tooth structure and prevents reinfection.

Surgical treatment

If therapeutic methods are ineffective, surgical interventions are applied. One such method is apicoectomy (resection of the root tip), where the affected area is removed while preserving the rest of the tooth. In complex cases where tissues are severely damaged, tooth extraction may be necessary.

Complications of untreated periodontitis

Ignoring periodontitis treatment can lead to serious consequences such as:

  • Periostitis (gumboil) - inflammation of the periosteum;
  • Abscess - accumulation of pus near the tooth root;
  • Phlegmon - purulent inflammation of soft tissues;
  • Fistula - an opening in the gums for pus drainage;
  • Osteomyelitis - infectious damage to bone tissues;
  • Tooth destruction and extraction.

Timely treatment helps avoid these dangerous outcomes.

Prevention of periodontitis

Simple rules can help prevent the disease:

  • Regular professional hygiene - removal of plaque and tartar;
  • Timely treatment of caries - prevents infection spread;
  • Avoidance of tooth injuries - careful chewing of hard objects.

At the first sign of pain, it is necessary to consult a doctor.
