Braces
A healthy, beautiful smile always draws attention and evokes positive emotions. On the other hand, crooked teeth can cause discomfort and insecurity during communication. Braces are a modern and reliable method of correcting such issues. Time-tested and effective, these systems begin to show results within a few months.
The price of braces varies depending on the material and type of construction.
Malocclusion (incorrect bite) is not just a cosmetic concern. Many people are unaware that it can lead to headaches, gastrointestinal disorders, and contribute to health issues such as ear infections (otitis), sinusitis, and respiratory tract infections.
To correct the tooth row a brace system is installed. It is one of the most popular and most effective methods of fighting an incorrect bite
Types of braces
Braces may differ depending on the material method of installation and method of archwire fixation
Regarding material there are several types:
- Metal - budget and effective systems that correct teeth well but have a noticeable appearance which may not be very attractive.
- Ceramic - made from a material selected to match the colour of tooth enamel due to which they are almost invisible. However these systems are more bulky and cost more than metal ones
- Sapphire - elite systems made from sapphire have high strength. They are transparent therefore almost invisible but require careful hygiene maintenance
By method of installation there are two types of system. Vestibular braces attach to the front surface of the teeth which makes them easier to install and maintain but they are visible when talking or smiling. There are also lingual braces which are fixed to the inner surface of the teeth so they are almost invisible but this method is more difficult in installation and care.
Regarding archwire fixation there are two options: Conventional braces fix the archwire using ligatures which require significant force for moving the teeth, and self-ligating braces which allow the wire to be fixed without being blocked which promotes faster treatment and less discomfort for the patient
Prices for braces depend on their construction and material and also the complexity of the bite situation.
Stages of treatment with brace systems
Correction of the bite occurs in several stages:
- Diagnostics. The doctor thoroughly examines the patient using various radiography methods and other instrumental examinations. Dental impressions are also made and the condition of muscles and joints is assessed. Based on the obtained data a treatment plan is developed timelines and complexity of procedures are determined the construction of the device is calculated and a model of the teeth is created.
- Preparatory stage. Before the start of treatment the doctor may prescribe a number of procedures, in particular treatment of pulpitis, tooth decay and other diseases; Preventive procedures such as removal of dental plaque, fluoridation; surgical interventions: tooth extraction, frenulum, plastic surgery of the lips and tongue, exposure of impacted teeth or deepening of the oral vestibule.
- Treatment stage. After diagnostics and preparation of the oral cavity an orthodontic appliance is manufactured and braces are fixed on the teeth. After installation the patient remains under regular supervision of the doctor who adjusts the appliance during the treatment process. The duration of the treatment stage depends on the degree of dentoalveolar anomaly the patient’s age and other factors and lasts 12–15 months. It is necessary to visit the doctor 1–2 times a month.
To maintain the result both removable and fixed retainers are used. The duration of this stage is usually 1.5 to 2 times longer than the period of active treatment.
Indications for placement of braces
Aesthetics of the dental row is not always the main reason for aligning teeth. Often it is necessary on doctor's recommendation due to deterioration of general health condition.
Main indications for correction:
- eruption of teeth and the need for their alignment
- improvement of appearance
- developmental anomalies
- disproportionate growth of jaws
- incorrect bite
- dystopia – abnormal position of teeth.
Braces are often placed during the stages of preparation for implantation or prosthetics. If bite disorders are not treated, serious problems may occur in the body such as facial deformation, digestion disorders, speech problems, headaches, and spine pathologies. That is why it is not worth delaying consultation with professional dentists of the Gallant clinic to prevent the development of complex complications.
